How AI Agents Will Choose an Insurer (A Guide for Insurers)

How will AI agents choose between insurers? Agents will favour insurers they can transact with directly, that can actually write the risk, that offer the best total value (not just the lowest price), that handle exceptions quickly, that pay claims reliably, and that are financially sound and properly regulated.

For decades, winning in insurance distribution meant winning human attention: a strong brand, a good comparison-site ranking, an office on Main Street, or a large sales team. When an AI agent does the buying, most of that stops mattering.

An agent doesn’t see your adverts. It doesn’t remember your jingle. It evaluates what it can query, and it keeps score. So what will it look for?

The six things agents will weigh up

Think about how an agent might rank T-shirts on a shopping site: price, fit, return rate, delivery speed, reviews. Insurance needs a longer and more serious list.

1. Availability

Can an agent actually buy from you? That means quoting, submitting information, confirming consent and completing the purchase without a person filling in forms or making a phone call. If an agent can’t transact with you, it will transact with someone else.

2. Eligibility

Can you write this particular risk? Agents will learn quickly which insurers decline which risks. Clear, queryable appetite, instead of a quote that fails halfway through, makes you easy to recommend.

3. Economic value

Price still matters, but agents look at the whole picture: premium, excess, limits, exclusions and the likely total cost to the customer. A cheap policy with an exclusion that matters to this customer will lose to a slightly dearer one that fits. Agents read the fine print, so the fine print becomes a competitive feature.

4. Service

How quickly are complex cases and exceptions handled? Agents will route around providers that leave them waiting on a human for days.

5. Claims quality

This is where agents will be most unforgiving. Speed, support, dispute rates and payout reliability can all be measured, and an agent that remembers outcomes will stop recommending insurers who make claims hard. Good claims handling turns into repeat business in a way it rarely has before.

6. Trust

Financial strength, regulatory status and complaints history. Agents acting for someone else have every reason to be conservative here.

What insurers can do now

  • Make products machine-readable. Structured product information, eligibility rules and policy terms, instead of PDFs and web forms.
  • Expose the key steps as tools. Quote, bind and service through APIs or MCP, with the customer’s consent captured properly.
  • Be explicit about appetite. Tell agents early what you will and won’t write.
  • Treat claims as distribution. Your claims experience is now part of your sales pitch.
  • Plug into where agents already are. Building a direct connection to every agent platform isn’t realistic. A single insurance layer that agents already use can put your products in front of them.

A new channel, not just a new threat

It’s easy to read all this as a threat to existing distribution. It is also the biggest new distribution channel insurance has seen in years. Agents will buy on behalf of consumers who never visited a comparison site and small businesses that never had a broker. The insurers who make themselves easy for agents to understand, trust and transact with will reach them first.

Do insurers need to build their own AI agent? Not necessarily. What matters is that other people’s agents can find, understand and buy your products. That can mean publishing your own agent-ready tools, or distributing through an insurance layer that agents already connect to.
